Please introduce yourself and tell us about your work at the Albertina photo studio. I have worked as a trained photographer at the Albertina for more than 30 years and I am now head of the photo studio. At first I worked with black and white photography; then we moved on to using scan backs. Now we work exclusively with the latest digital technology, including a high-resolution camera by PhaseOne and the SupraScan high-performance scanner (SupraScan Quartz A1 – Product) by i2s. I am assisted in the studio by my colleague Ms Pohankova, who is also a trained photographer. Our work has two main focus areas. We are currently in the process of digitalising our own stocks for long-term archiving, online presentation (http://sammlungenonline.albertina.at) and further processing, such as e.g. exhibition catalogues. And we also create high-quality scans of our stocks, which can be ordered by external customers for a fee. We work with a wide variety of objects. The Albertina owns books, prints and paintings of all sizes. However, we mainly scan prints and newspapers up to a size of DIN A1. Almost all of the objects are unique and highly valuable. We therefore have to proceed very carefully during digitalisation. How did you become interested in “book scanners”, given that you had previously worked very successfully with camera systems? For a number of reasons, we began to work more intensively on book scanning. At the Albertina, we are unable to suspend the camera directly above the material for safety reasons. The National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco (called « NLKM ») is actively engaged in preserving its national heritage. This project was created in 2009 with the goal of conserving, restauring, and digitizing all the Moroccan heritage funds, representing 80,000 manuscripts (200,000 titles) of every era since the 9th century, conserved in every Moroccan library (NLKM, heritage libraries, university libraries, public libraries, and private libraries which are open to the public). Determined and engaged, NLKM has set clear objectives: make accessible all francophone content through a digital library , preserve the original manuscripts (deteriorating with public use) , expand its reputation internationally and establish a « temple guardian » reputation , conserve at least one digital copy (in case of a catastrophe), digitize all the manuscripts for mid-June 2016. To reach these goals, NLKM has partnered up with i2S, specialists in image capturing and processing, and with Spigraph (Moroccan agency) to assure a global service. Since the beginning of the project in 2009, i2S has equipped NLKM with a book scanner called CopiBook. Then , to reach a sufficiant production rhythm, NLKM has enlarged its scanner park with CopiBook and DigiBook scanners for works requiring partial opening to scan. « These scanners are magnificent. La Bibliothèque Nationale du Royaume du Maroc (dit « la BNRM ») est activement engagée à préserver le patrimoine national. Ce projet a vu le jour en 2009 dans le but de conserver, restaurer et numériser tous les fonds documentaires marocains, comprenant 80.000 manuscrits (soit 200.000 titres) de toutes les époques depuis le IXème siècle, qui sont conservés dans toutes les bibliothèques marocaines (BNRM, les bibliothèques patrimoniales, les bibliothèques universitaires, les bibliothèques publiques et les bibliothèques privées ouvertes au public). Volontaire et engagée, la BNRM se fixe plusieurs objectifs : rendre accessible tous les fonds francophones au travers d’une bibliothèque numérique, préserver les manuscrits originaux qui se détérioraient avec les consultations publiques, élargir sa notoriété à l’échelle internationale et introniser sa réputation de gardien du temple du patrimoine culturel marocain, conserver au moins une copie numérique, au cas où il advienne une catastrophe, numériser tous les manuscrits pour mi-juin 2016. For offering knowledge accessibility to all, the National Library of France decided to facilitate cultural heritage access to its audience. A recognized civic engagement but the public library sees its limits with the use of photocopiers: the old or bound books wore out quickly (face down, crushing) and you can’t see what is printed or scanned. It is clear that a image capture from the top is the most suitable technique. Thus, from 2009, the National Library of France becomes the first public institution in the world to equip themselves with eScan Open System book scanners, innovative scanning solutions developed by i2S respectful of all works, for replacing photocopiers. Through the outsourcing company Sedeco, the National Library of France is equipped first – in 2009 – with 12 eScan book scanners first generation, the first self-service book scanner on the market easy to use and ergonomic. Résumé: Les objectifs de ce projet étaient de numériser la totalité du contenu de cinq périodiques historiques publiés entre 1869 et 1990 à partir d’originaux localisés à la Bibliothèque Photo Mary Evans, Blackheath. La solution de numérisation devait: Livrer des images de haute qualité pour une utilisation en ligne par les chercheurs sociaux dans le monde entier. Être capable d’être installée sur place à la bibliothèque Mary Evans dans un espace très restreint. Permettre de numériser rapidement afin de respecter le délais de mise en ligne du service d’archives. Le projet a été réalisé à l’aide de scanners de livres développés par i2S et soutenu par Spigraph, partenaire exclusif de distribution d’i2S au Royaume-Uni. La solution comprend: Deux scanners de livre CopiBook Cobalt RGB A2 opérés par l’équipe d’Auto Docs à la bibliothèque Mary Evans.
